Consumer input needed for a Cochrane Review looking at whether GABA receptor agonist drugs (diazepam and chlormethiazole) are effective and safe in the treatment of acute stroke.
Skills / interests: Patient and public input
I am looking for consumer input on a review update looking at gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonists for acute stroke.
GABA receptor agonists are a type of drug that may help protect the brain in acute stroke. This group of drugs, which includes diazepam and chlormethiazole, has been used as traditional sedatives for several decades, and have been found to be beneficial in stroke studies in animals. However, the sedative effect of GABA receptor agonists could be harmful for people with acute stroke.
Cochrane considers a consumer, in this case, to be a patient, a parent or carer of a patient who had suffered an acute stroke and were given GABA receptor agonists orally (by mouth) or intravenously (through the vein). For consumer peer review, we will ask you to complete a short form with your feedback to ensure the review is accessible and relevant so that it will be helpful to patients and their carers/families with healthcare decision-making.
You are welcome to provide feedback on any aspect of the review, or you can focus your attention on the sections you feel are most relevant to consumers and stakeholders, such as Abstract, Plain Language Summary, and Conclusions. Our aim is for this to be a manageable task, that does not overburden consumer reviewers.
Thank you in advance for considering!
