Pregnancy & Childbirth

Did you or your baby, or someone you know experience an infection after childbirth? Your input is needed on a review looking at the effects of routine, preventive use of antibiotics in women in labour on mother and baby.

Skills / interests: Consumer (public, patient, carer) input

Maternal sepsis is the third leading cause of maternal death globally and a risk factor for infections and death in newborns. It is a life-threatening condition, usually due to a severe bacterial infection of the uterus during pregnancy or immediately after childbirth. Giving antibiotics to pregnant women has been shown to prevent infections in both mother and baby. However, the effects of routinely giving antibiotics to women in labour to prevent infections in both mother and baby are unclear.

I have a team who have conducted a review on the ‘Effects of antibiotics prophylaxis in labour on maternal and neonatal outcomes'. Would you be interested in helping us with this article?

Cochrane considers a consumer to be a person with experience of the condition (in this case, maternal and/or newborn infection), either as a patient or as a carer/family member of a patient. From a consumer perspective, we are interested in if the language of the review, especially the language used in the Plain Language Summary, is accessible and if it feels relevant for those experiencing infection, such that it will be helpful to patients and carers with healthcare decision making.

While you are welcome to provide feedback on any aspect of the review, you can focus your attention on the summary sections. Our aim is for this to be a manageable task that does not overburden consumer reviewers.

Thank you in advance for considering!
