The effect of nutrition and clean water on the severity and occurrence of malaria

Skills / interests: Statistical analysis, Searching for evidence, Writing (drafting and editing), Data analysis and organisation

Methodological skills / interests: Statistics, Comparing multiple interventions (network meta-analysis and overviews)

In 2008 A.H. Shankar contributed the chapter ‘Malaria and Nutrition’ to the book Nutrition and Health in Developing Countries, Second Edition, Edited by: R. D. Semba & M. W. Bloem. This work listed many studies that showed synergistic links between malaria and malnutrition and specific nutrients and well as some antagonistic effects.

In the last 17 years much more work has been completed on the effect of overall malnutrition and absence of specific nutrients on malaria.

This task is to up carry out a new update on the effect of malnutrition (and clean water and sanitation) on severity and occurrence of malaria by completing a research review article as a Cochrane study that documents the effect or not. Publication of such a review may encourage field researchers to carry out more focused studies of whether improved nutrition, clean water or sanitation can help.

Please review the information on the topic and let me know how you can help. I can email you the article if you do not have access to it.

I expect that there are many other published studies on the topic. Finding and review these will be the first task. Feel free to set up a meeting with me on teams if you wish to discuss more.

I will update tasks over the next few weeks.
